When the Word, “Zionist”, Becomes a Container

Maureen Galindo’s pledge to send “American Zionists” to a Texas ICE camp shows what “Zionist” is now permitted to hold.

A word is a container. Pour one thing into it for a hundred years, then pour another, and most people will keep reading the label and miss the swap.

On the weekend of May 16, 2026, Maureen Galindo, the Democratic candidate in the runoff for Texas’s redrawn 35th Congressional District, posted to her campaign Instagram a multi-slide attack on her opponent. Referring to herself in the third person, she wrote that “She’ll turn Karnes ICE Detention Center into a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers for human trafficking.” The next sentence, in parentheses, added that “It will also be a castration processing center for pedophiles, which will probably be most of the Zionists.” The San Antonio Current ran it under a plain-English headline: house candidate pledges to send “American Zionists” to internment camp. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the Washington Times, and Mediaite carried it. A senior Texas Democrat, James Talarico, said he won’t campaign with her. The Federal Election Commission still lists her as a registered candidate. Early voting in her runoff was already underway when she posted it. She came in first in the four-way March primary with 29.2 percent of the vote on a fundraising base of under ten thousand dollars.

I want to talk about the container.
